Why won’t my car start? Here are some of the common reasons

As soon as you notice that your engine isn’t firing up as easily as usual, you’ll want to make it a top priority to have the mechanic take a look. This way, you’ll hopefully be able to remedy the underlying issue before it escalates and your car won’t start at all. At Rennen Imports, we specialize in European engine diagnostics and repair in the greater Tampa area. We’ll quickly identify your Euro car’s problem and then flawlessly fix it.

Common Causes of No-Start

Issues with fuel supply often lead to no-start. If your fuel pump is failing, then gas won’t be able to successfully transit from your tank to the engine. Symptoms of a fuel pump problem include worsening gas mileage, sputtering/surging, and a whining sound emerging from the gas tank. A clogged fuel filter can also make it hard for your engine to start. By replacing your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, you can help to avoid this problem. Also, gunked-up fuel injectors may cause your engine to struggle to fire up. A fuel additive can be helpful with cleaning injectors and intake valves.

Battery/charging system problems can also cause no-start. There are various issues that can cause a battery to die, such as parasitic draws, loose/corroded connections, old age, forgetting to turn off headlights, and a faulty alternator. Signs of alternator trouble include malfunctioning electrical accessories and an illuminated dashboard warning light that reads ALT or GEN or flashes on in the shape of a little rectangular battery.

A bad starter can also prevent your engine from firing up. You’ve got evidence of a faulty starter if you turn the key and your dash lights come on but your engine won’t start and you hear a clicking sound. Starter trouble can also cause a grinding noise.
