What Are the Symptoms of Suspension Failure?
A healthy suspension will help to ensure smooth handling and safe driving. When you first notice suspension trouble, you'll want to bring your vehicle to the shop for an inspection. Here's a look at six signs of a suspension problem.
Drifting
As long as you're driving in accordance with the speed limit, it shouldn't feel like you're drifting or swaying when you take sharp turns. If it does feel this way, then there's a good chance that suspension trouble is brewing.
"Nose Diving" Sensation
Failing shocks can make it feel as if your car is thrusting forward at a downward angle when you hit the brake pedal.
Bumpy Driving
If it feels like your hitting bumps on a road that is obviously paved smoothly, then there's reason to be concerned about your suspension's health.
Fails the Bounce Test
You can do an easy test to help you figure out if your shocks/struts are worn out. First, make sure that your car is safely parked. Next, go to the front end of the vehicle and use all of your muscle to press down. Rock it a couple of times and let go. Then, head around back and do exactly the same thing on the rear. Upon releasing, if your vehicle rocks more than two or three times, then a suspension issue may be present.
Bald Spots on Tires
Worn-out shocks/struts can cause tire tread to wear down unevenly. As a result, bald spots could form on your tires.
Leaking
There's a good chance you'll need to replace your shocks if you can see that oil is leaking out onto them.
