What are common signs of cooling system trouble?

The moment you turn the key and your vehicle comes roaring to life, your engine temperature begins climbing rapidly. As long as all aspects of your cooling system are functioning like they should, then you'll have the mechanisms in place to regulate the heat. But if there's a problem with your cooling system, then your engine could be at serious risk of overheating, which could cause major problems, such as a cracked block. If you have reason to believe that your cooling system isn't working properly, then you'll want to get to the shop for an inspection. At Rennen Imports, our local mechanics are experts at fixing cooling system problems in European vehicles.

Indications of a Cooling System Problem

The most familiar sign of a cooling system issue is that smoke is billowing out from under the hood. When this occurs, you may need to add coolant/water. If so, you'll want to play it safe and make sure your car has fully cooled down before you open the cap to add the fluid. Another common sign of cooling system trouble is that your temperature gauge has ascended into the red zone. In such a scenario, you can call up the shop and explain what exactly is going on. Then you can get guidance on whether or not your vehicle should be driven, or if it'll be safer to get a tow.

Cooling system problems often stem from coolant leaks. If your coolant level has noticeably dropped, then it's possible your car has an internal coolant leak. A sign of an internal coolant leak is that your exhaust smoke is white, which occurs due to coolant becoming burned up in the combustion chamber. This could mean that you're dealing with a blown head gasket.

You should also watch out for external coolant leaks. From time to time, you'll want to take a look at the ground where your car is often parked and see if there is any evidence of automotive fluid leaks. Coolant is identifiable by its bright color, which is commonly green. But your coolant might be a different color, like pink, yellow, or orange.
