Simple Maintenance Tasks to Keep Your Engine in Great Shape

Simple Maintenance Tasks to Keep Your Engine in Great ShapeBy taking some basic maintenance measures, you can help to keep your engine running strong well into the future. It's best to check your owner's manual for mileage points at which certain maintenance tasks should be completed. At Rennen Imports, our local mechanics are experts at conducting auto maintenance on European vehicles. From oil changes to filter replacements, we'll help to ensure that your Euro car's engine remains in great shape.

Important Types of Engine Maintenance

Staying up to date with oil changes is one of the best ways to keep your engine healthy. Conventional oil typically needs to be changed somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 miles. On the other hand, synthetic oil provides stronger protection and doesn't need to be changed as often. By following your oil change schedule, you'll help to prevent metal-on-metal contact from damaging your engine's moving parts.

Another way to keep your engine healthy is to periodically check over your engine's belts. Belts that are cracked or otherwise in poor condition should be brought to a mechanic's attention. Timing belts generally should be changed out at some point between 60,000 and 105,000 miles. If you delay timing belt replacement, then the belt may break, leading to major engine trouble.

It's also important to replace filters as needed. Air filters need to be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles so that the right amount of air can reach the combustion chamber. If there is poor airflow, then fuel may not burn like it should, which can lead to worse gas mileage and higher emissions. Fuel filters should be changed out at about 25,000 miles so that contaminants don't hurt engine performance and MPGs.

Another important task is to keep up with cooling system service so that you don't risk your engine overheating, which is something that could cause serious damage. It's generally recommended that coolant gets exchanged every 30,000 miles or five years, but you'll want to check your owner's manual for your vehicle's particular guidelines.
