Common Land Rover Discovery Problems
Land Rover is well known for building highly versatile, luxurious SUVs. While these vehicles are built to go anywhere, they aren't invincible. As with any car or SUV on the road, they are bound to have some issues. The Discovery, one of Land Rover's most recognizable models, is no different. If you currently own a Discovery built between 1994 and 2004, or are in the market for one, be sure to stay on the lookout for these common issues, as noted by current and past owners.
Leaking Head Gaskets
If the vehicle is presenting with engine misfires or other engine performance issues, it may be due to leaking head gaskets and/or failed cylinder liners. This issue will also result in a drop in coolant levels, which can lead to overheating and additional engine troubles.
Throttle Body Coolant Leak
If you spot a coolant leak that collects near the middle of the vehicle it is likely that the leak is originating at the throttle body deicer. The coolant will travel down the engine toward the rear of the vehicle before dripping to the ground. This issue tends to occur an average mileage of 114,000.
Broken Rear Cargo Latch
SUVs, including the Discovery, are great for hauling all sorts of cargo. Of course, if you can't access the cargo area, you'll be pressed for space. Internal failure of the rear cargo door latch can prevent the opening of the door from the outside. This issue is reported to occur at a wide variety of mileage points between 12,000 and 207,000.
Common on many vehicles, oil leaks can be detrimental to the health of a vehicle's engine. The most commonly reported locations of oil leaks on the Land Rover Discovery are from the engine oil pan and the valve cover gaskets. If you spot anything leaking from your vehicle it is important to have it repaired as soon as possible.
Failed Air Springs
The air springs fitted to the Land Rover Discovery are known to develop leaks, which could result in an uneven ride height. Not only will this make driving uncomfortable, but it could cause drifting and increased tire wear.
